WP4.2 Development of intelligent vibration damping systems

Thermal operating behaviour & limits of Piezo stack actuators

Current activities

Experimental investigation of temperature dependent actuator behaviour and active actuator air cooling. Finalisation of temperature dependent actuator model.

Results & achievements

The new developed thermal actuator model can predict the self heating effect of the actuator and the actuators force and electric field response.

Colling investigations showed that an active air cooling can extend the thermal operability margin of piezo actuators. When using actuators with cooling channel the self heating effect can be nearly neutralised and high driving frenquencies and high electric field amplitudes become possible.

Rotor vibration reduction by viscoelastic bearing support

Current activities

Experimental and numerical analyses of the dynamic behaviour of a rotor test rig with different elastomer bearing configurations.

Results & achievements

Validation of the numerical model of the frequency dependent elastomer ring properties with very good agreements between the measured and simulated mass unbalance response of the rotor test rig.

Low noise structural fan OGV

Current activities

Optimisation of acoustic and structural design of Ultra Low Count Fan OGV.

Results & achievements

Development of a structural low loss, low noise Cut-on outlet guide vane technology.

WP4.3 Novel structure for Mid Frame

Current activities

Two Turning Mid Turbine Frames (TMTF) have been designed by MTU (C1) and Volvo Aero (C2, 10% shorter than C1). Parallel to this a two spool high speed test facility has been built up at the Graz University of Technology.
