With its approximately 2.6 billion euro in sales and a workforce of  7,100 people, MTU Aero Engines is Germany's leading engine manufacturer and an established global player in the industry. Having carved out leading positions in engine technologies, the company participates in a plurality of national and international technology programs and frequently sets the pace providing advanced technologies. It is the uncontested No. 1 in low-pressure turbines and high-pressure compressors, as well as manufacturing and repair techniques.

MTU leads SP4, WP4.1 and WP4.4 and is responsible for the assessment of the benefits of the advanced turbofan concept with respect to CO2 and noise reduction. MTU’s objectives in DREAM:

  • Aerodynamic optimization of the turbine mid frame flow path to take into account its impact on the upstream and downstream turbine components joining Volvo Aero and TU Graz.
  • Further improvement of low-pressure turbine efficiency by active boundary layer control along with the University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich.
  • Development of a closed-loop active clearance control system for low-pressure turbines to optimize the running clearance during different flight conditions and to avoid the deterioration effect teaming up with Stuttgart University, Magna Steyr and Vibro-Meter.
