DLAThe German Aerospace Centre DLR is the German centre for aerospace research and space agency. DLR performs R&D in national and international partnerships. It also acts as national space agency on behalf of the federal government. The DLR is the largest establishment for engineering research throughout Germany. It consists of 25 research institutes and large test facilities. Its key areas in aeronautics are

  • Lightweight construction, materials technology and adaptive structures,
  • Aerodynamics, Aeroacoutics, structural dynamics, Aeroelastics,
  • Propulsion systems,
  • Large-scale test facilities and test rigs,
  • Flight control and flight guidance,
  • Low-noise air traffic,
  • Simulation.

DLR has long lasting expertise in Fan and Propfan aerodynamics, aeroacoustic and structural design and aeroacoustic measurements. This experience includes the numerical prediction as well as the instrumentation
and testing at DLR’s own large scale test facilities. The DLR Institutes involved in DREAM are the Institute of Propulsion
Technology and the Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology located in Braunschweig.

The DREAM involvement features the design and optimization of a Counter Rotating Open Rotor with respect to aerodynamics and aeroacoustics. DLR will use an automatic optimization tool for the aero-design and advanced acoustic analysis for the noise emission evaluation. DLR will take part in the engine tests with advanced acoustic instrumentation and data analysis methods.

The outcome of the DREAM project will enable DLR to consolidate and extend its expertise in the aerodynamic and acoustic design of fans. The existing design and prediction tools will be validated with the test results and the methodology will be optimized in order to support national and European industrial partners.
